Toxic shock syndrome
Toxic shock syndrome – TSS

Toxic shock syndrome
Toxic shock syndrome, TSS, is often caused by a skin infection or an infection in a surgical wound but is seldom associated with the use of tampons and menstruation. However, it is important to know that if you forget a tampon, you may develop a thick, strong-smelling discharge. If you have inserted a tampon and then suddenly develop a high fever, an odorous discharge and feel nauseous, remove the tampon immediately and contact your emergency healthcare provider for advice.
Symptoms
TSS progresses rapidly and the signs and symptoms include a high fever and one or more of the following symptoms:
– vomiting or diarrhea
– skin rash or redness of eyes
– swelling of your palms and soles
– muscle aches
– headaches
– dizziness and cold sweating
– odorous discharge if you use tampons
If you suspect that you have TSS, contact your doctor immediately or go to the nearest emergency room.
In Sweden, call 1177 for advice.
