What are probiotics?
Probiotics are live microorganisms (bacteria or yeast). The word probiotic means for life.
Lactic acid bacteria
Lactic acid bacteria, also called lactobacilli (of the Lactobacillus species) are predominant in a healthy vagina where they make the environment acidic. An acidic environment that has a low pH value is paramount for a healthy vagina. Normal vaginal flora varies slightly from person to person, and even in the same woman, for example, during her menstrual cycle.
The body’s estrogen level is lowest during and around the time of menstruation. This means that natural lactic acid bacteria growth is lower compared with the second half of the menstrual cycle. Menstrual fluid can also elevate vaginal pH. This promotes the growth of unwanted microorganisms – that thrive in environments with a higher pH – during and around the time of menstruation. Many women experience discomfort in the form of malodour in connection with menstruation.
New hygiene routines, workouts such as spinning and changing sexual habits are a few factors that can affect the vaginal environment. Excessive intimate hygiene routines mean that many wash away the natural, protective lactic acid bacteria. As a result, the sensitive vaginal walls can become thin and dry, causing a burning sensation in the vagina.
Ellen’s probiotic tampons
ellen® Probiotic Tampon is designed to promote the natural vaginal flora during menstruation and helps the body to maintain a balanced vaginal pH.
Each tampon contains Lacto Naturel (LN), a mixture of lactic acid bacteria from three strains: L. fermentum LN99, L. rhamnosus LN113 and L. gasseri LN40. These are a natural part of healthy women’s vaginal flora.
