What are probiotics?

Probiotics mean living bacterial cultures and the word probiotics means “for life”.

They are good bacteria naturally found in the body.

What are prebiotics?

Prebiotics are parts of food and dietary fiber that cannot be broken down in digestion, but nourish the good bacteria in the body – the probiotic.

What are lactic acid bacteria?

Lactic acid bacteria are a collective name for microorganisms that are normally found in the body.

There are many different lactic acid bacteria and they are divided into different genera and strains. When the microorganisms break down sugar, lactic acid is formed.

Not all lactic acid bacteria are probiotics, but it depends on the strain they come from.

Lacto Naturel (LN®)

Lacto Naturel (LN®) stands for Ellen’s probiotic bacterial strains and is the natural probiotic substance in the ellen® Probiotic Tampon and in the ellen® Probiotic Intimate Créme.

Ellen’s probiotic bacterial strains are among the common vaginal lactic acid bacteria found in a healthy, fertile woman with a balanced vaginal bacterial flora.

Lacto Naturel (LN®) is a mixture of three probiotic lactic acid strains:

Lactobacillus gasseri LN40

Lactobacillus fermentum LN99

Lactobacillus rhamnosus LN113

Lactic acid bacteria in the vagina

In a healthy vagina, lactic acid bacteria, also called lactobacillus species, dominates which provides an acidic environment in the vagina. The normal flora varies slightly from person to person and can also vary with the same woman during e.g. menstrual cycle.

The body’s estrogen level is at its lowest during and around menstruation, which means that the natural lactic acid bacteria growth is lower compared to growth in the middle of the menstrual cycle.

The menstrual fluid can contribute to an increased vaginal pH and the growth of unwanted microorganisms – which thrive at higher pH levels – can be promoted during menstruation. Many women experience inconvenience and discomfort associated with menstruation.

New habits

New hygiene habits, forms of exercise such as spinning and changed sex habits are some factors that can have a negative impact on the environment of the vagina.

Excessive genital hygiene causes many to wash away the natural and protective lactic acid bacteria. The result may be that the sensitive skin around the vulva becomes dry and brittle, or you may experience a burning sensation in the genital area.

ellen® Probiotic Tampon

ellen® Probiotic Tampon is developed to maintain the natural pH during the period, for a good intimate health.

Each tampon contains the natural probiotic mixture Lacto Naturel (LN®).

ellen® Probiotic Intimate Créme

ellen® Probiotic Intimate Créme also contains Lacto Naturel (LN®) and is specially developed to lubricate the sensitive skin of the vulva.

The lactic acid bacteria have moisturizing properties while coconut oil softens nicely.

A hormone-free alternative

ellen® Probiotic Intimate Crème is a hormone-free alternative and is free of perfume and water, to not dry out the sensitive intimate area.
